Despite a thousand years of glorious history, the people of England know surprisingly little about the facts and fables, people and places and events and emblems that have shaped their country and its heritage. How does the Haxey Hood Game work? Who was Saint George? Why is English Law different to Scottish Law? From the White Cliffs of Dover to MG Rover, from the Campaign for Real Ale to Royal Mail, and from John Milton to blue stilton, Nicholas Hobbes explains and celebrates every aspect of Englishness for a modern audience. The result is as entertaining as it is essential.

Review: I was given this book last Christmas – and it got passed round us all over the next few days during which we got quite nostalgic over Bird’s custard and it settled a discussion on James Bond. There’s nice gentle humour throughout and it’s amazing what facts you pick up, or thought you knew but weren’t quite right about. It covers pretty much everything you could want to know about England. I’ve since sent a few copies out to expat friends of mine to universal gratitude.

The author, NICHOLAS HOBBES lives in London and is the author of Essential Militaria, England: 1,000 Things You Need to Know, Stumped! The Sports Fan’s Book of Answers and Who Would Win a Fight between Muhammed Ali and Bruce Lee?: The Sports Fan’s Book of Answers.
