“The Chequered Flag” is a complete record of the world’s most popular sport at the top level. The author gives a year by year narrative account of motor racing from the first road race run in France in 1894 to the present. Charting the astonishing technical development of the racing car over the last 100 years, and of the sport itself from road racing to organized sport, and the divergent strands on either side of the Atlantic, he discusses the drivers, the cars, the designers, the impresarios, and the overriding importance and influence of commercialism. The book has an extensive cross-referencing system for easy access of information, a photograph of every winning type of car, every World Champion and every American Champion and detailed results tables for every year.

Review: This book is absolutely amazing, chronicling the first century of motorsport right from the first race held in Paris where the average speed of the winner was 11 mph right up to present day formula one, along with all the pitfalls and boosts a century of war and technological advances have contributed. Although missing the last few years (where, let’s face it, nothing much has happened) the reader is whisked back to the days when a champagne lunch and a full time mechanic were commonplace in racing cars that used public roads and told how motorsport evolved into the track-based event it mostly is today…
