The Diary of Colonel de Villebois-Mareuil, from November 24, 1899, to March 7, 1900. Authorised translation from the Paris Liberté, by Frederic Lees
French ex-officer & adventurer commanding a “small body of French & Dutch volunteers,” i.e. mercenaries, in South Africa & KiA 5/4/1900. In December 1899 he was appointed to the rank of Major in the Boer forces by General Joubert, & fought in the Battle of Colenso. Due to his leadership capabilities he was given the rank of Major-General & became commander of all Foreign Volunteers on 17 March 1900.
